University of New Mexico, Center for English Language and American Culture

University of New Mexico, Center for English Language and American Culture Location: Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA

The Center for English language and American Culture (CELAC) at the University of New Mexico (UNM) is designed for students who are planning to attend a university in the United States and for those students who wish to develop college level skills in listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Applicants must be at least eighteen years old and have a high school diploma. CELAC students come from many different countries and cultures. A communicative, cultural comparative approach is used to teach the classes, including discussions and information concerning American values and lifestyles to help prepare students to study and live in the United States. The mission of CELAC is to prepare students to succeed in academic classes at the university level in the United States. For those students who are planning to continue their academic study (either undergraduate or graduate) at UNM, CELAC offers an introduction to UNM's International Admissions Office, as well as help in following application procedures for full-time academic study at UNM. In addition, for those students planning to attend UNM as full-time students, CELAC has a special concurrent enrollment program with the UNM Admissions Office. Even before the student has fully reached the University's required English proficiency level, if the student has been making satisfactory progress in CELAC classes and reaches a designated proficiency level, he or she may begin to take some academic credit classes while still taking some CELAC English classes. This special permission is designed to be a bridging program between the English and academic classes.
